November 15th is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day! Yes, I know. You want to tell me to put a sock in it!!
With work, kids to raise, a house to manage (and did I mention I’m a part-time cab driver for the family too!) cleaning the refrigerator may be the last thing on our minds. Do you relate to Kermit’s expression? Bummer…this is a drag!
So why should we clean out the refrigerator?
Making time for cleaning the fridge has more benefits than you may think. Keeping the refrigerator clean is part and parcel of having a well-organized and functional kitchen.
Did you know that having a disorganized or cluttered kitchen may actually cause you to overeat?
It makes sense then, to keep an organized kitchen. This can help us make better food choices. Am sure you know that overwhelming feeling when messes begin to pile up in your kitchen. Chaotic indeed.
I find it much easier to whip up a nutritious meal when my kitchen is in order and ready for use. And for me, that starts with my fridge.
Have you ever opened the door to your refrigerator, find that it’s full, but still feel like it’s impossible to prepare a meal? Your refrigerator may be loaded with healthy produce, but if you can’t find that spinach for your salad, what’s the point? With a disorganized fridge, you may wind up picking something up or heading out to eat. It’s the obvious choice, especially at the end of a long, hard day!
Over time, this can lead to ‘not so great’ food choices. What’s more you end up wasting a tonne of food and money!
Here are my top tips to get your fridge in tip-top shape so that you’re well on your way to healthier eating.
1. The Refrigerator Spa
This is something I actually put in my calendar to ensure it gets my attention. I remove everything from my fridge and use a mixture of warm water and dish soap. I wipe down the insides of my fridge. Not only does this clean the areas where food sits, it can help get rid of any lingering odours. I then dry with a clean towel to remove any excess moisture. To help keep your refrigerator odor-free, orange peel can come in handy. Crush up some orange peel, and place this on a plate lined with a paper towel. Keep this in your fridge and enjoy the fresh smell everytime you open the fridge door! Remember not to leave your food out in the “temperature danger zone” (4-60°C) for longer than two hours!
2. In-sight for meal planning
Cleaning your fridge is just one of the perks. Removing the actual food can help you get at hard to reach areas. It brings to your attention foods that may have been neglected. Knowing what you have at hand can help better plan upcoming meals and grocery trips. The food in your fridge becomes in-sight, which can reduce waste and save you some bucks! Are you sold?
3. Race the Expiry Date
Does your family throw out expired items regularly? Maybe you get rid of fruits and vegetables too often. How do I avoid this? We make soups, stews, stir-fries, salads and smoothies. There isn’t often a set recipe – I bung in whatever I can grab. It’s a fun way to try something new – on the fly. Another trick that helps us race the expiry date is to bring forward foods that are close to their expiration date. We also follow the FIFO (first in, first out) rule. When unpacking groceries, we take the time to place fresher items towards the back of the shelf.
4. Sub-in Your Freezer
Another way to keep your refrigerator organized and clean is to sub-in your freezer. I often place ripe bananas in my freezer to use for smoothies or blend them (from frozen) into a delicious ice-cream. Fruits like grapes, berries, peaches, pineapples, watermelon are a treat when frozen. Our kids love them!
I’ll leave you with a thought.
As I stare at Kermit’s image, I’d like you to ‘lean’ on your fridge and show it some TLC so it can serve you better. Use your refrigerator as a vehicle to support healthier eating!
