Done in under 30 minutes, these fillets are perfect as a weeknight meal. Simple, yet uncompromising on flavour. This blend of spices works well with other types of fish and seafood. The tried-and-true ones from my kitchen are salmon, cod, haddock and shrimp.
I don’t know about you, but I love the winding down in our eating routine post Christmas; in pursuit of ‘lighter,’ perhaps more healthier meals. When I think of light food, I picture a lean protein source as one option. Basa fish with its mild, slightly sweet flavour and delicate texture definitely fits the bill. Marry it with a delicious colourful salad and voila; we have an enticing and satisfying meal. Additionally, it uses minimal oil, making this an ideal dish for those on the hunt for healthier meal options. The addition of lemon juice serves as a super alternative if you’re watching your intake of salt.
People often approach me with concerns about eating fish. Well, the benefits certainly outweigh the risks. According to Health Canada, most Canadians don’t need to be worried about mercury exposure as a result of fish consumption. Most of the common types consumed by Canadians are relatively low in mercury; basa being one of them.
When cooking the fish, avoid flipping too much and be wary not to overcook it. The fish will be flakey when done.
4-Spice Basa Fish FilletPrint This
- 5 basa fish fillets, large
- 2 1/2 tsp curry powder
- 1 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 1/4 tsp salt
- 5 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lemon, juice
- Dry fish fillets with a paper towel
- Combine spices and sprinkle the spice mix to coat the fillets completely on both sides
- In a large skillet or pan, heat oil over medium/high heat
- Add fish to the skillet and cook for 5-6 minutes per side or when cooked through
- To serve, squeeze fresh lemon juice
Loaded with flavour, this simple and spicy basa fish fillet will soon become a family favourite - perfect with a side salad.
